Where we build around Nashville

Nashville and every city within about 30 miles of downtown, across eight counties. Each city page covers the local permit and fence rules you’ll run into.

Nashville Outdoor Works is based in Nashville and builds across Davidson County, including Bellevue, Antioch, Hermitage, Donelson, Madison, Old Hickory and Green Hills, all of which follow Metro Codes. Past the county line, each city writes its own rules. Franklin, Brentwood, Hendersonville and Murfreesboro each have their own fence heights, and a few towns don’t allow chain link at all. Some want a permit for every deck, others only above a certain height. Pick your city below for what applies there, or call (615) 873-9975 if you don’t see it listed.

Questions about where we work

How far from Nashville do you work?

About 30 miles from downtown in every direction: Davidson County and the cities around it in Williamson, Maury, Sumner, Wilson, Rutherford, Robertson and Cheatham counties, from Franklin and Spring Hill to Gallatin, Lebanon and Murfreesboro. If your town isn’t listed, call and ask; the distance is often closer than it looks.

Are fence and deck rules the same in every city around Nashville?

No. Each city writes its own. Metro Nashville allows fences up to 8 feet at the side and rear, Thompson’s Station stops at 6 feet, and Forest Hills allows only open fences of 4 to 5 feet. Some cities permit every deck, others only those over 30 inches. Each city page here lists its rules.

Is HOA approval the same as a city permit?

No, they’re separate. A city permit says the project meets the city’s code; an HOA approval says it meets your subdivision’s covenants, which can be stricter on fence height, material and color. Many subdivisions around Nashville need both, and the HOA usually wants drawings before it signs off.

Which cities near Nashville have their own building departments?

Most of them. Franklin, Brentwood, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, Gallatin, Mt. Juliet and the other larger cities issue their own permits, and inside Davidson County so do Belle Meade, Forest Hills and Oak Hill. So do the smaller towns, from Greenbrier to Kingston Springs. Each city page names the office that handles yours.
